Prostate cancer symptoms - what to look out for

Most men with early prostate cancer have no symptoms and it can only be detected by testing for prostate specific antigen (PSA) and other biomarkers. Common symptoms of prostate cancer also occur with benign enlarged prostate and are the result of the enlarged prostate pressing on the urethra (the tube that passes urine from the bladder to the penis)

Common prostate cancer symptoms that can also be caused by an enlarged prostate include:

  • Having to rush to the toilet to pass urine
  • Difficulty in passing urine
  • Frequent urination i.e. passing urine more often than usual, especially at night
  • Blood in the urine (this is not common)

Other symptoms that may occur are back pain and weight loss, particularly in elderly men, and difficulty getting an erection (where you haven't had difficulty before). Cancer of the prostate gland often grows slowly, especially in older men. Prostate Cancer symptoms may be mild and occur over many years. Sometimes the first symptoms are from prostate cancer cells which have spread to your bones. This may cause pain in your back, hips, pelvis or other bony areas.

IF YOU NOTICE A CHANGE OR ARE EXPERIENCING THE PROSTATE CANCER SYMPTOMS DESCRIBED, ENSURE YOU SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY.
The earlier prostate cancer is picked up, the easier it is to treat and the more likely the treatment is to be successful in offering positive long term survival rates. It is important that you go to your GP or contact us as soon as possible and don’t ignore the symptoms.
